In reply to Your Lordship's

telegram of the 4th. instant, I have the honour to confirm

my telegram of the 10th. instant stating that Hr. Boulton

will start for London on the 15th. instant, but that the

financial condition of the Colony absolutely precludes

the acceptance of any modifications by the Consulting

Engineers involving an increase of expenditure. In the

meantime steps will be taken to obtain tenders for deposit-

-ing the pierre perdue in accordance with the present

proposals pending final instructions in the matter,

and

arrangements will be made to proceed with the dredging of

the trench for the Breakwater.

I shall be obliged if Your Lord-

-ship will be good enough to authorise the Crown Arents for

the Colonies to pay Mr. Boulton his full salary as from the

16th. instant at the rate of $4,800 per annum at 4 shil-
